When I was younger, I didn’t know how to define racism. Growing up as the child of immigrants, my parents were unable to explain the complex societal issue of racism to me because they didn’t know what it was. At the same time, the education system had not fully explained racism to us either because it was believed to be “awkward”. We were taught that it was a thing of the past - a thing that died along with Jim Crow laws and segregation - because perhaps it was more difficult to face that racism and bias was still present amongst us. Unfortunately, this meant that when I faced bias and discrimination in my elementary years, I was not equipped with the tools to stand up for myself.
I was inspired to co-found 4SEE because I knew that, without educating youth on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), we are not equipping them with the tools to stand up to discrimination, racism, and explicit bias. These disparities are behind many of the fundamental issues in our society today. I believe it is pertinent that we ensure all youth have education on these topics.
So let’s have those “awkward” conversations together. Through 4SEE, we CAN envision a more sustainable, equitable future for all.
